About Us

James Donaldson Timber Ltd (JDT) is one of the UK's largest importers and distributors of timber, handling some 200,000m³ per annum. The company's core activities include sawmilling, processing and distribution - with the emphasis on giving customers what they want, when they want it.

A business based on relationships, JDT imports only quality timber, mostly from Scandinavia, from a chain of long-established, quality suppliers with impeccable environmental credentials. JDT specialises in softwoods; clears, construction, and joinery softwoods, and "Silktrim" primed MDF Mouldings. All products can be made to customer specified profiles as well as a range of standard profiles. The company supplies split packs, full packs, mixed delivery and special profiles - a full service, based on customer requirements.

As part of its commitment to full customer service, all JDT sales, manufacturing and distribution processes are monitored by an in-house management system, guaranteeing standards of service and quality of goods.

In line with the policy of its parent group, JDT operates a "green conscience" in its sourcing and in its own processes. A range of the latest environmentally sensitive timber treatment is available through the company's three timber treatment plants.

Our History

150 years ago, James Donaldson set up shop at Tayport, 20 miles or so away from the current Leven site. Tayport's east coast location and harbour made it the ideal site for importing timber from the Baltics. Two decades later the Leven site, close to the Methil port facility, was opened and, in 1919, the company was incorporated and became a limited liability company. While for the first 125 years the company remained a conventional timber importing business, in the mid-1980s James Donaldson & Sons Ltd expanded with the creation of timber engineering company, Donaldson Timber Engineering, and continued to do so - acquiring two further business enterprises - to make the Donaldson Group.

Today, the 'original' part of the business trades as James Donaldson Timber Ltd and JDT makes up a quarter of the James Donaldson Group.

Moving into England

JDT had worked effectively with one branch in Scotland since the company began, however orders in the North of England were rapidly increasing, so early in 2010 JDT opened a branch in Chorley, England.

The Chorley site had previously traded as Alfred Hulme Ltd, after being acquired by the James Donaldson & Sons Group in November 2008. However, in April 2010 Donaldson's decided to amalgamate the Leven and Chorley sites into one trading entity in order to enhance the JDT commitment to grow its presence in the market place.

Having a branch in England has brought a number of key benefits to JDT's customers in the way of product offering, supply synergies and enhanced service. The company has had particular success with merchants in the North of England, and continues to focus a great deal of attention on supporting the Merchant sector.

JDT's longer term strategy is to offer full UK coverage, and hope to open a branch of JDT in the South of England in the near future.
